Walk 2: Desire Lines
(2)Desire lines to get to the lake
Desire lines are informal paths used by pedestrians rather than formal paths. In just a short span around the lake, there are multiple signs of these dirt patch paths off the sidewalks. Used by bikers possibly to get around pedestrians, fishers to get down to the lake front, and people who want to cut the grassy corners instead of walking around. These 'lines' are the representations of the human activity in this place.
Hey Sage, I think the bike desire lines are so interesting. In the desert, they don't stand out as much and they're easy to overlook. I think it's funny how the side walk is a foot away and they are riding on the grass instead (very bottom left one).
ReplyDeleteI love how you point out that these paths reflect human activity, it’s such a small detail that says so much. It’s interesting to think about how many different purposes one worn trail might serve.
ReplyDeleteYour post makes me wonder why those bikers (in the first section) chose to ride on the grass instead of the road. Was it because of safety? Maybe it was because they wanted to feel the friction of the grass underneath their wheels? You do capture the traces of human activity in your photos very well.
ReplyDeletesage,
ReplyDeleteIt is so interesting to see what desire lines look like in other places. in the desert somtimes I feel like I am making up the desire ines I see because of how everything here blends together. where you are however, it is so clear to see because grass wont grow there.
